Mission 3 - Crossing Greenland: Learning from the Inuit People, east to west crossing.
In Greenland, Dan will embark on an extraordinary journey across one of the most unforgiving landscapes on Earth. This mission isn’t just about endurance—it’s about immersing himself in Inuit traditions, mastering Arctic survival skills, and crossing the vast ice sheet from east to west. Dan will connect deeply with the land and the people who have thrived there for generations.
Dan will begin his adventure by living among the Inuit, learning their timeless techniques for surviving in one of the harshest climates in the world. Living in Remote Settlements stay in villages like Tasiusaq or Ittoqqortoormiit to gain insight into daily life, from fishing to crafting tools.
Dan will be participating in traditional practices such as, Dog Sledding Learn how Inuit hunters train and manage sled dogs for transportation and hunting. Fishing and Hunting engage in sustainable methods for catching Arctic char, seals, or musk oxen. Inuit Craftsmanship Try carving soapstone, crafting tools, or creating sealskin garments practices that have been passed down for centuries.
Before setting out on the east-to-west traverse, Dan will train with local experts and prepare for the grueling expedition across Greenland’s ice sheet.
Dan will need to master the Arctic techniques such as building snow shelters like igloos or Greenlandic-style ice caves. Practice traditional navigation techniques using the landscape and ice patterns. Physical Preparation learn how to haul a sled loaded with supplies across endless icy terrain while conserving energy, Dan will learn survival skills gaining insights into staying warm, managing food supplies, and recognizing early signs of frostbite or hypothermia. This training will be crucial for the pinnacle of the Arctic expedition at the end of the year in Siberia.
Dan will attempt the epic challenge of crossing Greenland’s ice sheet, a journey that will test his endurance, resilience, and newly acquired Inuit knowledge. Route Overview Starting near Tasiilaq on the eastern coast and trekking westward to Kangerlussuaq, Dan will cover over 600 kilometers of icy expanse. Daily Challenges extreme weather, battling freezing winds, snowstorms, and sub-zero temperatures. Dan will have to learn the navigation skills of Traversing featureless terrain with minimal landmarks, relying on training and intuition. Self-reliance managing provisions, building shelters, and keeping equipment operational in an unforgiving environment.
We will of course have our cameraman “Nathan” out there capturing the resilience and resourcefulness of the Inuit people, showcasing their connection to the land and the ice. We will highlight the cultural storytelling, highlight the ingenuity of the Inuit survival techniques that have been honed over millennia, and document the role of traditional knowledge in thriving amidst Greenland's changing climate. Crossing Greenland from east to west is a grueling physical and mental challenge, but doing so with Inuit knowledge will provide Dan with a deeper appreciation for this incredible land. Dan will have to adapt to harsh weather, manage isolation, and trust in the skills he’s learned from the Inuit people to complete this journey.
